American Bicycle Racing: The Tour Of Missouri

Tuesday, November 10th, 2009

One of the most interesting of all American bicycle racing events, the Tour of Missouri that sees cyclists riding across more than six hundred miles is certainly a premier event that attracts some of the top cyclists from the world. The state of Missouri is known to offer some very deceptive topography and this in turn means that cyclists taking part in this excellent American bicycle racing will need to cross rivers and climb steep hills and of course the Ozarks have their share of climbs that never seem to end – all of which makes the Tour of Missouri a very demanding and challenging race.

Tough And Demanding

It is therefore expected that only the cyclist with the strongest body and best stamina and who is an expert will be able to win a race as tough and demanding as the Tour of Missouri. This particular American bicycle racing begins in St. Louis on Labor Day (7th September,) and once the race gets underway it means having to negotiate a ten lap and seventy-mile circuit over fast as well as flat terrain that of course suits the sprinters the most and who will almost certainly be seen wearing the leader’s jersey at the end of this first stage.

Then, this American bicycle racing will require that cyclists start from Ste. Genevieve they will then have to compete to win this stage that spans about one hundred and twelve miles – finishing at Cape Girardeau. This time the terrain will be hilly though only moderately so and the feature of this stage is its finishing circuit.

After this stage, the Tour of Missouri will start off from Farmington and will mean cycling for another one hundred odd miles through the Northern Ozark Mountains till the cyclists reach Rolla. From there, this American bicycle racing takes the cyclists on a tour from St. James to Jefferson City with the finish boasting of a three hundred meter uphill sprint that will tax the strength and stamina of the cyclists to the extreme.

The next stage begins at Sedalia and involves a short approximate eighteen mile race around the Missouri State Fairgrounds and from here the cyclists will need to climb some hilly terrain beginning at Chillicothe and ending at St. Joseph.

At the end of a week of racing the cyclists will conclude this American bicycle racing by riding over a hilly circuit through Kansas City streets during which two King of the Mountain points can be earned by the best riders over the mountain stages.

All this grueling racing requires that in order to stand a chance of winning a bicycle racing each competitor will need to undergo bicycle race training of the toughest type. This in turn means making changes to your lifestyle and diet and of course you will need to put in lots of effort in performing demanding exercises and workouts; and a lot more.

All About The Italian Bicycle Race Called The Giro d’Italia

Sunday, November 8th, 2009

When people think about an Italian bicycle race they generally think about the famous race called the Giro d’Italia which is actually the Tour of Italy bicycle race that was first run in the year 1909. This particular Italian bicycle race is one that involves racing over long distances and which takes place each year during the months May and through to early June.

Twenty-One Different Stages

The Giro d’Italia is an Italian bicycle race in which there are a total of twenty-one different stages consisting of time trials and racing up the mountains as well as over flats and the race involves negotiating the different topography of the rugged Alp Mountains as well as the Dolomite mountains.

All in all, cyclists taking part in this Italian bicycle race will need to, among other things, race in streets that are steeped in history and then they will have to scale some fearsome volcanoes and then they will have to vend their ways down some of the most spectacular coastal regions in Italy. What’s more, a few sections of the Giro d’Italia are conducted outside Italy and this is what makes this particular Italian bicycle race so very interesting.

Known simply as The Giro, this Italian bicycle race is one among three main European professional races and it is as tough and demanding as the others that include the Tour de France and Vuelta a Espana or Tour de Spain. During each stage the leaders in this Italian bicycle race are given different jerseys that signify their prowess and standing of the best cyclists in the race classifications.

The pink jersey is worn by the overall leader in the race and it is of course also the jersey that the final winner of the Giro d’Italia wears. There is also points classification and whoever is the leader will be wearing the mauve jersey that recognizes that the wearer is the fastest sprinter and this is jersey is next only in importance to the pink jersey.

Then there is the King of the Mountain or the green jersey that is given to the racer that scores maximum points which are given to the racer that reaches the mountain tops ahead of others. Other jerseys given to racers taking part in the Giro include the white jersey and the blue jersey and also the black jersey.

Today, almost everyone that has an interest in bicycle racing has heard of Lance Armstrong who is an American cyclist that has dominated the world of bicycle racing. However, there are also many famous cyclists that have raced in and won American bicycle races. In fact, at home in America there are other cyclists that enjoy as much if not more popularity as does Lance Armstrong including names such as Andy Hampsten and Greg LeMond as too George Hincapie.

Which Is The Toughest Bicycle Race In The World?

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Many bicycle racers believe that the toughest bicycle race in the world is the Race Across America or RAAM as it is also known as. Others believe that the toughest bicycle race is one of the fabled Le Grand Tour races including the Tour de France which is acknowledged by most racers as being the ultimate in bicycle racing on this planet. What distinguishes the toughest bicycle race from the others is that the former is far removed from the race-around-the-park kinds of bicycle races. However, no one will deny that the Tour de France is in fact one of the most eagerly anticipated of all bicycle races on this planet.

Tour De France Or RAAM?

The only question that remains unanswered is whether the Tour de France is tougher than the Race Across America. Given the fact that RAAM road race involves, for the most part, amateur riders it could be said that this race is tougher than the Tour de France simply because racers participating in the RAAM race will need to finance themselves when taking part in the race. In the case of races such as the Tour de France professional riders with sponsorship, expert levels of support and best trainers around to help them are in a different racing world altogether.

A racer taking part in the RAAM bicycle race may also have to wake up in the wee hours of the morning to train by cycling for long distances before coming home to take care of the home and family and then they will need to hold down a daytime job to earn enough money with which to pay for expenses involved in being a road racer.

Nevertheless, all these difficulties notwithstanding, these racers will, year after year, continue to arrive from different parts of the world and line up on the lovely shores near the Pacific Ocean to be one of the many trying to win this bicycle race that will see them cover more than three thousand miles till they reach the east coast.

Given the unique racing conditions it is safe to conclude that RAAM is certainly the toughest bicycle race in the world and even in terms of distance covered the racers need to race for eight hundred and six miles more than is the case with the Tour de France.

The most famous Italian bicycle race is the Giro d’Italia or The Giro as it is popularly called. This is a long distance bicycle race that involves professional bicyclists that spend about three weeks and is part of the Grand Tours.

Going on a Cross Country Cycling Tour

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Going on a cross country cycling tour may be one of your dreams, but you are really not going to be able to go through with something like this unless you are willing to take the time to plan ahead and make sure that you have everything ready and set to go before taking off. This is not a bicycle race, this is something much bigger. On a cross country cycling tour, you are literally going across the country, although of course you don’t have to go right from one end to the other, and so you are going to need to have everything planned beforehand.

Planning

There is a lot of attention to detail that is going to need to be paid when you are trying to plan your cross country cycling tour. If you are going to have other cyclists going along with you, which is always a good idea because then you have company and you also each have the other in case something were to go wrong.

So for your cross country cycling tour, of course the first thing that you are going to need to deal with is figuring out where you are going to start this cycling tour and where it is going to end. Of course you can always change it along the way, but the best idea is to stick to your game plan right from the get go. You are going to have maps and bike trails and other details that you have planned out before leaving and it is not going to be that easy to just switch it up once you are out there.

Of course if this is something that you think you are likely to end up doing, and you are not that familiar with the area that you are touring through, there is always the option of hiring along a bicycling guide to come along with you. This is a tour guide who is going to be there biking right with you and make sure that you don’t get lost. They are familiar with the area and will also be able to help in the event that anything were to go wrong or you wanted to change your route, for instance.

When you are planning a cross country cycling tour there is really no way to overdo it in terms of your planning. It is really going to be worth it for you to check things over twice, three times, to make sure that you are set.
